Join us for the launch of Middlesbrough Town Hall's brand new classical
season as an extended Northern Sinfonia exclusively perform the world
premiere of a symphony dedicated to Middlesbrough and it's Football Club.

The Middlesbrough Symphony was written by local composer David F
Golightly, who has the reputation of an 'Englishman with a Russian Soul'.
It will be performed live for the first time to mark the 100th birthday of
Middlesbrough's iconic landmark The Transporter Bridge.

As an ardent supporter of Middlesbrough FC Golightly's colourful symphony
purposefully depicts an optimistic learning journey through life as well as
the highs and lows of the beautiful game.

The Symphony captures perfectly the atmosphere of a typical match day - with
all the pre-match excitement and the two halves of the game built into the
structure of the music.

David said of his work "I see this symphony as my own gift of friendship to
Middlesbrough and the people of Teesside, and I'm proud to see the town
standing alongside major cities like London and St Petersburg as one of only
three in the world to have classical symphonies like this dedicated to
them."

The second half of the concert features popular works by Stravinsky and
Elgar - and it's not too big a compliment to say that David F Golightly's
symphony sits very happily alongside these great works. Stravinsky's
Firebird Suite fits with the Russian theme that is visible in the
Middlesbrough Symphony and the concert comes to brilliant close with one of
Elgar's most important works the elegiac Cello Concerto.
